Arnold Schwarzenegger's California campaign staff is "scrambling" to conceal a potential disaster: erotic, nude photographs of the bodybuilder-actor-governor candidate taken by controversial, gay photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
"The shocking nudes of Republican Schwarzenegger have been kept under lock at the Estate of Robert Mapplethorpe in New York," the Drudge Report said. The report offered no further specifics or names, citing only anonymous "sources close to the late artist." Mapplethorpe died of AIDS in 1989.
Jack Fritscher, Mapplethorpe's ex-lover, told the Gay.com/PlanetOut.com Network on Wednesday that he believes Schwarzenegger did pose nude for Mapplethorpe, but not necessarily in "erotic" photos.
In fact, Fritscher has sold nude photos of the movie star, and other related items, on eBay. His "Schwarzenegger Shrine" -- four photos taken by Mapplethorpe and an original "Conan the Barbarian" script -- was offered for $24,000, the Washington Post reported.
"Europeans are so much more open to nudity than Americans, it makes sense to me that Schwarzenegger, as a European, would pose nude and have it be no big deal," Fritscher said. "Robert did not have sex with Arnold, though. He had sex with a lot of his models, but not with him," Fritscher said.
Among the items Fritscher offered on eBay was a postcard Mapplethorpe made from a photo he took of Schwarzenegger wearing just a posing strap. Mapplethorpe used the postcard as an invitation to the "Hot Dirty Man Party," a gay orgy in New York in 1978.
